our technology

< EMOTION RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY

how does it work? >

Extracting emotions from audio. audEERING has developed the leading emotion detection technology for human voice. We can detect over 50 emotions. For this challenge, you will receive a model with the following basic emotions: happiness, excitement, anger, sadness, relaxation, boredom. In addition to that, you can work with the following details of the voice: urgency, control, pleasantness. You can choose a set of emotions for your game or demo.

1. AUDIO INPUT

The user shall be encouraged to use the microphone for interaction through game design.

2. EMOTION DETECTION

The emotion model identifies the type and score of the above-named emotion.

3. GAME INTERACTION

The output values can now be used to trigger events in the game (e.g. animations).

  4. You will send the signed documents via email and we validate it

with the documentation from May 1st, 2019.
  6. You will have until 31.07.2019 to complete the challenge
  7. You will send us the game (uploaded) and your presentation (via video).
Details will be announced to the participants.

  9. The winner will be publicly announced on Gamescom 2019.

Which criteria are important for the judges?

Play your game once before submitting it. If you liked it, it means you have a high chance to win.
Quality is certainly more important than quantity. A single functionality which takes the user experience into account and flows naturally has a much higher chance of being selected in comparison to multiple levels with a lot of interactions and no coherent flow.

The number of team members and the quality of the work they are offering is also considered. A team of five offering the same result as a solo indie developer? We know who should win here.

Make sure to submit your work even if you are not completely satisfied with it. You will still receive a certificate of participation.

How many people can be in your team?

That is arbitrary, however, only the team leader will receive the grand prize to Gamescom or Red Bull Wings Lab. You may also note that the number of members is considered in the quality of the result for the judges. For example, if a team and a solo developer produce the same result that would mean that the solo developer would be considered the winner.

What does the “internship interview” in the prize list mean?

audEERING has reserved one paid internship position for the winner of this challenge. This is particularly interesting for developers who wants to know more about the connection between Artificial Intelligence and Game Industry.
Winning the challenge practically means passing the technical interview and the interviewee would likely be hired considering that he or she fulfills the basic HR requirements (e.g. being allowed to work in Germany).

How should you develop a game?

You can use the Unity Game Engine. You will be provided with a plugin which will do the Emotion Recognition. It is not required to have a Pro license as your evaluation will be done in an editor. However, the winning team would require a Pro license if they want to release the game.

Which emotions can you use?

audEERING provides you with a free developer’s license of our emotion detection software. This reduced model can detect 6 emotions – happiness, excitement, anger, sadness, boredom, relaxation. In addition to that it can detect pleasantness, urgency and control from the voice with a confidence score for each one of them.
You can freely choose one or more emotions for the interaction in the game.

How will you get a free developer's license?

Every registered applicant for GaCha 2019 will sign a challenge contract with audEERING. You will have the right to use the software in any way necessary to reach your challenge goals.
You hold all rights to your developed code, while audEERING is allowed to freely use and process your code for public demonstration purposes.  For the winning developers and companies there is the option of an exclusive licencing of audEERING’s software for further development and commercial use.

How do you get familiar with using audEERINGS software?

The participants will receive the documentation along with the plugin. In addition to that, feel free to contact us if you find any problem. We are more than happy to help.

What should your finished game look like?

There are two categories, the My Grey Challenge and the Free Challenge. For both you should have a at last partially functional prototype. audEERINGs emotion technology has to be included so that a player can interact with your game via voice.

For the My Grey Challenge, the game should have communicative, realism and interactivity features. The customization and community features are optional. The game should have at least one level (quest, scenario) which would flow with beginning, process and ending.

For the Free Challenge, the game should be a MVP (Minimum Viable Product) which means it must demonstrate one functionality clearly. For example, if you are a battle commander, you might want to start with a little storytelling, depict the battle, ask the commander to do the motivational talk and then show the effect in the troops. Based on the motivations, that level of motivation would determine the output of the battle (showing victory or defeat). This demonstrates a scenario in which motivation detection is depicted as a minimum viable product in a game.
